Ear Wax Removal

Microsuction / Irrigation

Our ear canals are the gateway to our hearing, so it’s important to keep the ear canal free from obstruction – otherwise sound can become muffled or distorted.

Sometimes wax can become the problem, causing a reduction in our hearing or interfering with the use of hearing technology, ear plugs or headphones.

Whilst it is normal to have a certain amount of wax in our ear canals, sometimes it builds up or becomes hard and ‘impacted’. That’s where microsuction or ‘irrigation’ (aka ‘ear syringing’) can help.

Safe and Gentle Wax Removal

We offer three different methods of wax removal:

  • Microsuction – we use a tiny vacuum to gently lift the wax out of the ear canal.
  • Irrigation – this is the traditional method of wax removal where sterilised water is used to flush the wax out of the ear canal.
  • Dry removal – with this method we lift out the wax using something similar to tiny forceps.

All three methods are safe and gentle, carried out by our experienced audiologists under a high-definition ENT microscope. Using a microscope gives our clinicians the best view of your ear canal and ear drum whilst maximising stability and safety. This enables us to remove wax that other providers may struggle with.

We will generally use our clinical judgement to decide on the best method for your own ears and build up of wax, unless you have a particular preference for a specific method.

Do I need wax removal?

You many need wax removal if:

  • You have noticed a dullness or muffled quality to your hearing.
  • You are getting discomfort in the ears.
  • You are going on holiday and have a tendency to get blocked up after swimming.
  • You are about to have impressions taken—wax may need to be cleared beforehand to obtain a ‘safe and accurate ear impression’.
  • You are going to be having your hearing checked soon and want to be sure of accurate results.

No one can see inside their own ears, so it can often be difficult for you to know if you have a build up of wax. That’s why we offer free wax checks—we can photograph your ear canals and advise if they need clearing. And if it isn’t wax but you still have a problem, we’ll help you get to the bottom of it.
