Some ears simply don’t like getting wet.
It makes them prone to infection, or perhaps exacerbate a pre-existing condition such as a perforation.
And let’s be frank… we can’t always be confident that the water’s quite as clean as we’re told it is. Whether it’s sewage being dumped into the sea after heavy rain, or a hotel swimming pool abroad that’s fallen behind on its hygiene regime, none of that’s the sort of water we want getting in our ears.
Surfers and sea swimmers can also encounter a differ problem: exostoses. Exostoses (pronounced ex-o-stow-sees) are bony lumps that grow spontaneously deep inside the ear canal, just in front of the eardrum, with repeated exposure to cold water (and wind).
Although these growths are generally harmless and can remain small and non-intrusive for the duration of someone’s life, they can sometimes grow to close off the ear canal all together, dramatically reducing someone’s hearing. They can also trap wax and water behind them, increasing the risk of infection and reduced hearing. Keeping the water out of the ears stops them growing.
