There are two main challenges with protecting your hearing when it comes to shooting:
Firstly, there’s the sheer intensity of the gunfire
With most firearms producing sound between 140-170dB, a single blast can instantly cause irreversible damage to your inner ear’s delicate sensory cells. Here, you want to be maximally protected.
Secondly, there’s the suddenness of the sound
Most of the time you’ll be in quiet or normal sound levels – maybe even conversation (about 50-60dB). Hear, you want to be fully connected to what’s going on around you.
Hearing Protection for shooting therefore needs to allow you to hear all the ambient sounds and conversation when there’s no gunfire, but instantly and effectively block out the sudden intense blasts the moment they happen — whether it’s you firing the gun, or someone nearby.

Types of Hearing Protection for Shooting
Passive Custom Hearing Protection
Passive custom hearing protection for shooting are modelled to the shape of your ears from a silicon impression. They do not contain any ‘active’ electronics to cancel out the noise. Instead, they use some form of ‘passive’ filter that allows environmental sounds to come in fairly normally, but immediately shuts down when gunfire is heard. They come in a range of colours for personalisation or to make them easier to find if dropped on the ground.
Active Custom Hearing Protection
Active custom hearing protection for shooting contain a digital processor that monitors the environment for sound levels. When there’s no gunfire, it optimises your hearing for ambient sounds and conversation—but as soon as there’s gunfire, the computer chip instantly shuts down the sound.
Active hearing protection offer more flexibility than passive protection, both in terms of how they optimise the environment when there’s no gunfire, and also for the type shooting activity.
They come in a range of colours and technology levels, and even have the option of wireless comms. They are made to measure from a silicon impression of your ears.
